Holidaying With Children In Fiji

By Shane Hussein Posted 27 Feb 2014

If you are visiting Fiji with children, here are some points to consider:

Your Flight

While travelling with kids can sometimes be stressful, there are ways to minimise this stress and make the journey more enjoyable for everyone involved.

  • It starts with choosing a holiday destination (like Fiji) that doesn’t involve a long flight time, that’s family friend and that will provide plenty of interesting activities to keep your children entertained for the duration of their stay.
  • When packing, make sure you have all the essentials to keep your children entertained during the flight. Items such as pre-prepared snacks, colouring books and pencils, a travel journal, a book and puzzles, all help to alleviate boredom and make the flight more pleasant for everyone involved.
  • On the way to the airport, talk to your children about the different stages involved in making your way through an airport – from check-in to security. Explain to them what they need to do. You can turn some of the stages into a fun game with prizes and they’ll be much more likely to engage and enjoy the process.

Accommodation

Upon arriving in Fiji, you will be sure to notice the hospitality that the country is so famous for. If you’re hoping to enjoy some “Mummy and Daddy” time alone, you’ll find that most major hotels and resorts offer great kids’ clubs for young ones to attend – usually entry to these programs is free for children, so you won’t need to pay anything extra to have some alone time.

Quality accommodation providers such as the award-winning Castaway Island Resort and Outrigger on the Lagoon Resort are very child-friendly and not only offer fantastic package deals for families, but have world class activities to entertain the children.

Many children’s programs include activities such as art and craft, coral reef exploration, building sandcastles, swimming races, treasure hunts and more.

Outdoor Activities

Away from the hotels there is also a wide variety of family-friendly activities to enjoy. Water-based options include swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. Nature lovers can also enjoy some of the many coastal walks in the region that are well-marked and easy enough for young ones to traverse. The Kula Eco Park is a popular option with families. Located approximately 10 minutes’ drive from Sigatoka, and set in a beautiful rainforest reserve, the Eco Park promotes the conservation of Fiji’s indigenous animals and provides patrons with educational, hands-on tours.

Experiencing local culture

Families looking to immerse themselves in the local culture are also well-advised to purchase tickets from one of the region’s many tour companies, who arrange visits to local villages. Prices vary according to the length of the tour but will provide an unforgettable holiday memory for children and adults alike. Many tours provide pick-up directly from the major hotels on the islands so you needn’t worry about finding your way around.
