Surfing Fiji

If you surf, you’ll have heard of Fiji and some of the legendary breaks such as `Swimming Pools’, ‘Restaurants’ and of course, for the seasoned surfers, the iconic `Cloudbreak’.

Fiji is surrounded by perfect reef break waves, excellent wind conditions, and favorable tides. It's warm, it's tropical, and it's just perfect. The islands are renowned by world class surfers as having some of the best and most powerful waves in the world. Fiji is blessed with the third largest barrier reef in the world. For years the islands have been host to a number of international surfing competitions like the Globe Pros, Roxy Fiji Pros, and Red Bull Events.

"One of the most perfect waves that I have ever surfed." - Ten time world champion Kelly Slater about Restaurants, Tavarua

As an exotic destination with pristine beaches with most locations only accessible via boat, Fiji has earned its trademark in the world surfing circuit as having some of the best offshore reef breaks. Cloudbreak and Restaurants are set over shallow reef off Tavarua Island and are characterized by their long, fast barreling lefts. Both breaks provide the perfect surfing elements that make for World Championship tours.

" Cloudbreak is just a killer of a break with huge barrels and clean, open wave faces - it's all we can ask for, but on top of that, we get the best tropical location - all in all, perfect ." - World Champion and Globe Team Rider C.J. Hobgood.

While most of Fiji’s waves break onto the reef and are therefore better for the more experienced surfer, surf schools and beach breaks are also available for keen learners and rookies, so there’s quite literally something for everyone. You can mix it up on a variety of left and right-handers and are often sharing waves with only a handful of fellow wave warriors.

When & where to surf in Fiji?

You can surf year-round in Fiji, but it’s best between the months of April and October when consistent swells as high as 8-10 feet roll in – but really, the surf in Fiji is more often than not, nothing short of epic.

For advanced surfers…

Fiji is best known in the surfing world for the iconic CLOUDBREAK, three miles straight south of Namotu Island in the Mamanuca Island group and is regularly voted one of the 10 best/most challenging waves in the world.

Another for the surfing-thrill seekers is RESTAURANTS, right off Tavarua Island in the Mamanuca Islands, funneling around the western side. It is not as exposed to the swell as Cloudbreak, but during a larger swell and at higher tides, Restaurants is a surfer's fantasy. Perfectly shaped tubular waves have earned it a reputation as a "skate park in the water" when conditions are just right, with both small swell and high tides.

FRIGATES (Beqa Lagoon / Pacific Harbour) is definitely a world class left that can rival Cloudbreak for power, size and consistency. Because of the gradual tapering of the reef it can handle all swell sizes. Because it’s out in the ocean, about 20 kilometers from Matanivusi, it picks up all swell.

For moderate surfers…

NAMOTU LEFT (Mamanuca Islands) is sometimes referred to as the best longboard wave in Fiji, but it can also pack a punch for the shortboard guys too. Great for all levels when 3ft and under, but when it reaches 8ft and above, it’s one of the best big wave spots in Fiji for intermediate surfers and above.

DESPERATIONS (Mamanuca Islands) is big hump in the barrier reef just North of Wilkes Passage. It’s not a classic reef pass set-up, but has a unique shape that funnels the incoming swells into fun peaks

If you're in the mood for a fun and powerful right-hander, head to WILKES. Across a deep channel at the end of the Malolo Barrier Reef. You need to watch out for rips as well as the reef, but it’s not as shallow as some of the other spots to surf in Fiji and gives reasonable take-offs followed by long walls. This is one spot where you can find surfing in Fiji that’s suitable for all skill levels.

And for those beginners out there…

NATADOLA on the Coral Coast an hour drive south of Nadi, is a beautiful resort beach with a shore break that’s good for body surfing and beginners. It features an inside reef peak that’s good for longboarding in big swells – the perfect beach for beginners to get a feel for the waves without being intimidated by height. NATADOLA INSIDE LEFT is great for beginners and the wave is only fifty metres from the beach.

SWIMMING POOLS (Mamanuca Islands) on the SE side of Namotu Island while tricky to catch going off, is one of the most fun waves in Fiji. A righthander that has a wide-open face and steep wall makes the perfect playground.

Fiji Airways Holidays is proud to partner with Surf Fiji Ltd who are the pioneers of surfing in Fiji, and who offer the complete range of surfing experiences in Fiji from beginners to advanced with lessons, equipment and day trips.
