In Transit: 24 Hours in Melbourne (Part 1)

By Glen Smith Posted 10 Jun 2015

Melbourne is a fusion of stunning gold-rush heritage architecture, modern skyscrapers and sports complexes, surrounded by lush parkland, beautiful waterways and interesting urban suburbs. It’s the perfect stop-over when you’re on your way to or from Fiji – a 24 hour stop-over here is a great way to clear the cobwebs after a long flight from Europe or America.

Melbourne’s grid of city streets with its maze of gothic laneways is best explored on foot.

As you will discover, it’s obvious that the city places a great deal of emphasis on the arts particularly literature, performing arts, culinary arts and visual arts as well as sport and recreation which has become central to the Melbourne landscape.

Start the 24-hour experience from the iconic Flinders Street Station, Melbourne’s meeting point, straddled between the Yarra River and Flinders Street at the corner of Swanston Street. Its dome, analogue clocks, tower and distinct Edwardian style makes it a standard feature of the city. With its proximity to attractions it is the perfect place from which to base your adventure.

In no time, the aroma of coffee from gourmet outlets had tempted us to walk across to Degraves Street, a famous lane featuring bars, café, and restaurants.

After hot chocolate and waffles we walk to Federation Square to visit the Tourist Centre, enquire about current events and things to do including free public transport. We picked up a map of Melbourne city and downloaded the Melbourne Official Visitor Guide to kick off our wanderings. Our top tip from the Tourist Centre was to experience premier examples of Melbourne architectural splendor, including St. Paul's Cathedral and the Melbourne Town Hall.

Without any delay, we cross the street to admire St Paul’s Cathedral, a striking Gothic design both inside and out. The atmosphere inside is of peace and serenity, shutting out the noise of busy city life outside its doors.

City Circle Tram

To get our bearings, we hopped on the City Circle Tram which operates on a circular route through the Melbourne CBD and covers all of the essential stops you'll need to visit in order to see Melbourne in one day.  The free tram runs every 12 minutes and allows passengers to get on and off as they please.

Here is suggested itinerary for a day in Melbourne

Yarra River

Walk along the scenic Yarra River from Federation Square, past Rod Laver Tennis Centre to Melbourne’s proud sporting heritage, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which includes the Australian Sporting Museum and Racing Museum.

South Bank
Visit Southbank right across from Flinders Street Station, a world of waterfront shopping, dining and arts, incorporating the Southgate Arts and Leisure Precinct and Crown Entertainment Complex (Melbourne's casino) along the Yarra.

Eureka Skydeck
You won’t miss the towering spectacle of the Eureka Tower, the highest point in the city and a great way to see the entire layout of Melbourne. Eureka Skydeck is the tallest viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere.
