Fiji Airways Formalises Work Experience for USP Students

6 February 2018: Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline and the University of the South Pacific (USP) – Faculty of Science, Technology & Environment (FSTE) have formalised an industrial attachment partnership for Engineering students. The Memorandum of Understanding signed last week will allow students from USP’s Bachelor of Engineering programme to attain 800 hours of Industrial Work Experience at the airline’s Engineering and Maintenance facility at Nadi. The students’ will work at the main Hangar facility under the supervision of senior Fiji Airways Engineers, will also undertake a number of workshops while on attachment.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Andre Viljoen, welcomed the formal partnership with USP: “As the National Airline, we’re happy to assist in the growth and development of Fijian students who are interested in aviation. Given that we have Fiji’s biggest aviation maintenance facility and largest pool of Aircraft Engineers on staff, there really is no better place for them to get this kind of Aviation Engineering experience. We’re very proud of the support we currently offer to Fijian universities by getting students on various attachments and internship programmes across all facets of our operations.”

Dean FSTE, Dr. Anjeela Jokhan was very grateful and wished to state on record her appreciation to the executives at Fiji Airways and their very committed Engineering Team, “Today’s signing is the culmination of four years of work by both Fiji Airways and the University.  We didn’t get here overnight – months of negotiation, ensuring that IP, safety measures and so forth are covered in the agreement for all relevant stakeholders”.

The Industrial Work Experience (IWE) is a graduation requirement for the Engineering New Zealand (EngNZ) accredited degrees (formerly known as IPENZ), Bachelor of Engineering Electrical/Electronics and Bachelor of Engineering Mechanical Engineering.
