Fiji Airways becomes only Airline to fly between Wellington and Fiji all year-round

Fiji Airways expands route network with the launch of its Wellington – Nadi service today

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND: Fiji Airways expands its route network with the launch of its new direct service between Wellington and Nadi today.

Fiji Airways is now the only airline flying directly between Wellington and Fiji all year-round.

Fiji Airways Chairman, Nalin Patel says Fiji’s links with Wellingtonians and New Zealanders from the surrounding region will be further strengthened by this new service.

“This is one of the most significant new routes recently announced by Fiji Airways, and reflects the airline’s strong performance in New Zealand. For us, Wellington was a natural choice for a new service,” says Mr Patel.

“The new service is already proving extremely popular here in New Zealand with healthy forward loads. We’re obviously delighted by this response from Kiwis.”

Mr Patel says New Zealand is an incredibly important market for Fiji Airways, and the introduction of this new route is testament to Fiji Airways’ strong performance here.

“Increasing capacity between New Zealand and Fiji is something we have been focusing on since we announced details of our five-year strategic plan last year; and the introduction of this new route reflects our commitment to the New Zealand market, and in growing our global network,” says Mr Patel.

Fiji Airways has also doubled its capacity to Christchurch this winter, with the weekly Saturday flight complemented by a permanent additional service on Tuesdays which started this week.

The new service will run twice weekly, departing Wellington on Thursdays and Sundays, and opens up an additional 328 seats per week between New Zealand and Fiji. It will also provide Wellingtonians with an opportunity to conveniently connect on Apia, as well as to Los Angeles and other North American cities, via Nadi.

Wellington Airport Chief Executive, Steve Sanderson says it’s an exciting time for the city as the airport looks to extend its offering with the new Fiji Airways service creating an extra 34,000 seats to Wellington’s market.

“We have worked with Fiji Airways for a number of years on the opportunity the Wellington market presents, and are delighted they have committed to the region. This new service really demonstrates the demand and growth in international traffic to and from Wellington,” says Mr Sanderson.

Numbers of Wellington region residents travelling to Fiji have increased by 39% in the last two years, and numbers to the United States have grown by more than 25% over the same period. United States visitors using Wellington as their New Zealand point of entry have increased by 29%, over the same period.

Fiji Airways operates up to 13 weekly services between Auckland and Fiji, and two weekly services between Christchurch and Nadi, and Wellington and Nadi. Fiji Airways is the only airline to offer child discounted airfares as well as a daily business class travel option directly from New Zealand to Fiji.
