Marital Magic Takes Place Mid-Air

Love was in the air for five Kiwi Couples on Fiji Airways A330

August 7, 2013 – Today Fiji Airways, Fiji’s national airline, has given five New Zealand couples the opportunity to declare their love mid-air and get hitched on board its flagship A330 aircraft on a flight from Auckland to Nadi, Fiji.

Two couples from Wellington, one each from Hamilton, Christchurch and the Hawkes Bay took part in the unique wedding ceremony.

With an incredible 441 entries received to be one of the five couples married in the business class cabin of the new Fiji Airways A330, the sky-high event was set to be one to go down in the record books.

Fiji Airways Acting Chief Executive Aubrey Swift said, “This was a unique idea to get five couples married on board, in our bid to raise awareness of the new airline branding and of Fiji as a wedding and honeymoon destination. With our new brand identity and service, based around an authentic Fijian experience, a couple’s Fijian wedding really can start the moment they set foot on board. ” said Swift.

Departing Auckland International Airport today at 1pm the five chosen couples were married simultaneously on board the exclusive wedding-themed Fiji Airways Airbus A330. Each couple tied the knot in the new Fiji Airways business cabin with two chosen guests as their witnesses also joining them on the flight.

Shannon Currie, Fiji Airways Regional General Manager NZ, says “The inflight wedding has been several months in the planning, so it is wonderful to see it finally come together. It was fantastic to be a part of these couples exciting and memorable celebrations at over 40,000 ft!”

“Kiwis have such a strong connection to the Fiji Islands with many choosing to be married in Fiji, and many others spending their honeymoon there; and this is why we wanted to do something truly memorable. It also means the lucky couples could begin their honeymoons the moment they stepped off the plane,” says Mr Currie.

Each of the five newly wedded couples will also be treated to a two-night honeymoon in the tropical paradise of Fiji at either the Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa Fiji, or Radisson BLU Resort Fiji Denarau Island.
